US$600m for rail rehab

AUTHORITIES say they have sourced at least US$615 million from foreign investors to resuscitate the country’s 2 700km long rail system.

Responding to questions in the Senate, Transport minister Felix Mhona said that most of the tonnage transported along the country’s roads needed to migrate to the railway line.

“We are now witnessing roads that are being damaged because we are not having a vibrant railway line. “The initiatives that we are making through National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) where we cannot do it alone using the fiscal space, we have engaged a number of players in the category and recently, the chairman of China Railway International Group was in the country…” he said.
