ZIMBABWE’S fisheries and aquaculture sector is set to be transformed into a billion-dollar industry through a new Bill designed to tackle longstanding challenges hampering production and productivity, a senior official has announced.
The proposed Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill aims to introduce robust measures to promote sustainable fishing practices, invest in modern technologies, and support small-scale producers.
Speaking at a recent consultative meeting on the Bill, the chief director of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Production, Milton Makumbe, said the legislation seeks to create an enabling environment that maximises the sustainable use of Zimbabwe’s vast water resources.
