FARMERS lost over US$360 million of their crops and livestock in the 2023/24 agriculture season to the El Nino-induced drought, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (Fao) has said.
This comes as Fao urged authorities to review the country’s irrigation policy to enable investment in irrigation systems and mitigate future drought effects.
“Crop production damages and losses amounted to about US$345 million, accounting for the largest proportion of the total, followed by the livestock subsector estimated at about US$17 million and fisheries damages estimated at US$1 million…,”
