GOVERNMENT says it is planning to irrigate over 490 000 hectares by 2030 as part of its move to guarantee food self-sufficiency.

Speaking during a post-cabinet media briefing in the capital yesterday, Information minister Jenfan Muswere said Cabinet was informed on the acceleration of irrigation development for national food security and rural modernisation and industrialisation.

“Pertinent to note is that Zimbabwe has over 10.6 billion cubic meters of water in 10 600 dams, capable of irrigating 2.2 million hectares to support the required irrigation expansion drive to a projected 496 000 hectares by 2030.
