THE government says it will deploy extension workers at mines across the country as the Mines ministry seeks to offer technical services in the sector and also avoid accidents.
Mines ministry permanent secretary Pfungwa Kunaka on Monday said his ministry was consulting with other relevant stakeholders to create extension services in the mining sector.
“Due to gaps in the inspectorate and monitoring, the ministry is consulting relevant authorities with a view of strengthening these functions by increasing personnel as well as retooling laboratories and tools of trade. “As support to miners, especially artisanal miners, the ministry is consulting authorities with a view of introducing extension services in selected districts and wards…”
