ZIMBABWE significantly increased its electricity imports in the first quarter of 2024, a direct response to a deepening power crisis fuelled by drought and ageing infrastructure.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), the country imported 505,5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity during the first quarter, a sharp 33,3 percent increase from the previous quarter.
“About 35 percent of the electricity imported during 1st quarter 2023 was from Eskom (South Africa), while 28 percent was from Zesco (Zambia),” the agency said, highlighting the country’s reliance on neighboring nations.
