Tobacco hectarage increases by 7 000ha

THE country is expecting a bumper tobacco harvest in the 2024/2025 summer season on the back of increased hectarage put under the crop.

According to Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services chief director Leonard Munamati, the hectarage put under tobacco had risen from 46 989 hectares in the 2023/24 season to 54 453, raising stakeholders’ confidence that they will achieve 300 million kilogrammes in the current 2024/25 season.

Munamati said Mashonaland Central, with 17 077 hectares, has the highest hectarage under tobacco.
