US$2m debt stalls HCC chemicals procurement

HARARE City Council (HCC) says it is struggling to acquire water treatment chemicals because it has not settled a US$2 million it owes to Chemplex Corporation, the company that supplies them.

This comes as the local authority has been struggling to supply potable water to residents owing to leakages and water contamination in its major supply dams, among other reasons. Addressing a full council meeting last week Harare mayor Jacob Mafume said they had, however, come up with a payment plan to clear debt.

“HCC is owing Chemplex US$2 million of water chemicals which is making it difficult for them to acquire more chemicals to treat water…”
