ZIMBABWE is seeking US$23 million to complete the demining of 12 square kilometres of land, the last remaining area to be cleared in the country’s bid to be landmine-free by 2028.

This goal is part of the country’s commitment to the Mine Ban Treaty, which aims to eradicate landmines globally.

Initially, Zimbabwe had set a target to remove landmines left over from the 1970s war of liberation by 2025. However, due to challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and fluctuations in funding from international donors, this target is no longer achievable.
