THE country’s largest cotton producing company, Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco), says this year’s yield is expected to plummet by 30 percent owing to drought.
This comes after the country’s cotton production increased by 67 percent to 89,6 million kilogrammes during the last 2022/23 farming season, with statistics from the Agricultural Marketing Authority (Ama) showing that in terms of value, the white gold generated US$29,7 million.
However, with this year’s drought, Cottco board chairperson Sifelani Jabangwe said the situation was dire for cotton farmers notwithstanding the crop’s tolerance to arid conditions.
