Invasive alien species threaten food security

THE country’s food security is under increasing threat from invasive alien species (IAS) owing to a growing ecological crisis with serious consequences for agriculture, biodiversity and rural livelihoods, the Environmental Management Authority has warned.

IAS are native plants, animals and organisms that establish themselves in new environments that are spreading fast across the country’s ecosystems, competing with indigenous species and undermining food production.
