THE Ministry of Energy is banking on the upcoming La Niña weather phenomenon to bolster electricity generation as Zimbabwe continues to grapple with intermittent power cuts.

Extremely low water levels at Kariba dam compounded by frequent breakdowns at several aging thermal power stations in Hwange have adversely affected electricity production in the country.

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Gloria Magombo, said La Niña, which is characterised by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, is expected to bring increased rainfall to the country.
