Zimbabwe imports GMO maize

THE government has given millers the green light to import genetically modified (GMO) maize from South Africa, as authorities strive to ensure food security in the country.

Appearing before the parliamentary portfolio committee on Agriculture yesterday, Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe chairperson, Tafadzwa Musarara, confirmed the development and also assured MPs that the maize was safe to consume.

“We are importing GMO maize with the required tolerance levels. This maize is as healthy as our local maize … the nutritional value is there. “I know there are a lot of stories that if your kid eats GMO food, tomorrow he is going to have a beard. No, the maize is healthy…”
